Using the Sound Recorder

(as with many of these tutorials, it may be a good idea to print it before using the instructions)

I have been using the Sounder Recorder to make my own voice recordings and to tailor wavs in size and length for use on the web or just to reduce their size for enjoyment on my computer.

The Sound Recorder is found under Accessories so go to Start/Programs/Accessories and if not there open the Entertaiment menu on XP

You will notice that the drop down menus for:

  • file shows a properties selection

  • edit gives you the opportunity to delete before and after a particular stopped position.

I use these two selections to tailor my wavs.

Choosing the Mp3 format with the 32k bit and 22050Khz gives me the best results without losing major qualities of the recording.

Here is what I do: I open the file menu on the sound recorder and choose the properties option

Which yields this menu (below)

I choose convert now and get this window (below)

Then select from the format drop down window and choose MP3

and from the attributes drop down menu select 32kBits, 22050Hz Mono 3kb/sec

Your choice can be anything and you may want to shop throught the list to see other effects. I have this to work best for me.

To check the sound quality play your wav and see the difference. If you would like to save the original file, then be sure to save the altered file with a different file name, of course. I think the edit feature is pretty much self explanitory, but I have found that many current songs repeat themselves and if you can do without the lengthy introduction then perhaps editing will make the file more managable.

The tutorial for converting wavs from mp3 is on this link http://rosmd0.tripod.com/techpage/music/music.htm

Or the link is on the left window of this page at Music Downloads and Conversions.

I have had a lot fun with this software and I wish you the same. Questions? mailto:rosmd@everestkc.net
